Improving Access to Highcliffe Beach
BCP Council and Highcliffe & Walkford Parish Council are carrying out refurbishment works to the East and West beach ramps at Highcliffe to improve safety, accessibility and long-term sustainability. The project represents a joint investment of £220,000, funded equally by both councils.
Why Are the Works Needed?
The existing surfaces of both beach ramps have experienced washout in several areas, creating uneven and steep sections along the routes.
The refurbishment works will provide a sustainable solution by:
- Improving ramp gradients
- Enhancing drainage along the pathways
- Creating more even walking surfaces
- Improving accessibility for beach users
These improvements will help make access to beach safer and easier for residents and visitors.
Works Programme
The works are scheduled to begin in mid-September and are expected to take approximately 12 weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions.
To minimise disruption, the project will be carried out in phases, ensuring that one beach ramp remains open for public access while work is underway on the other ramp.

Beach Access
The accessible tarmac path leading from Waterford Road to Highcliffe and Naish Beach will remain open throughout the works.
Construction vehicles and machinery will use this route to access the East Ramp work area. Trained banksmen will be on site to help manage movements and ensure public safety while machinery is operating.
During refurbishment, the active work area on each ramp will be closed to the public. Visitors are asked to follow signage and use alternative paths within the local path network to access the beach when necessary.
Thank You for Your Patience
We appreciate your understanding while these essential improvement works are carried out. The completed ramps will provide safer, more accessible and more resilient routes to the beach for everyone to enjoy.
