Lake Pier - Pier Repair & Harbour Defence Works
Lake Drive, Hamworthy, Poole, Dorset, BH15 4LR
The Project
The Pier was closed in summer 2023 after condition surveys highlighted structural failings, particularly to the handrails, and raised health & safety concerns for the public.
The works to the pier consist of repairs to the existing timber structure, so that it can be returned to a safe condition and to extend its useable life span.
The timber pier was built around 1930s and was originally designed to provide fuel bunkering services for boats. It is of historic significance having originally been used as a landing point for clay for local potters and a fuelling station for flying boats in WW2. Brackets to hold the fuel pipes can still be seen on the side of the pier although the pipes have been removed. These will be kept in the repairs.
To protect the pier head and car park from coastal erosion, a new rock armour revetment will replace the existing storm-damaged rock gabion baskets. This new, locally sourced rock will strengthen a 55metre length of harbour frontage.
Due to the environmentally sensitive nature of the location there are approvals required and restrictions on the timing and method of working which means that the works can only take place at certain times of the year.
